Up and coming DJs always think that the scene is a closed shop, where in a virtuous circle only big named DJ's get booked because they are thought to sell tickets and hence they cant become big names.
Thats not entirely true. We do slip in unknown/lesser known DJ's etc (several played at the last one). You are not going to have a whole line up of up and coming talent though, as it is not what people want (as can be seen from the wish lists from our forum of who they want to see at the forth The Wonderland gig). Being booked is more than about the music too. I have known a lot of DJ's who are equally as good as the well known ones, but never quite made it because they didnt put in 110% and build their media profile and get a following of people..... as a promoter you expect a DJ to have a level of following and pull.....
I'd say good tips are:
Build a local following at as many club nights as you can
Get a niche, something that makes you stand out
Talk to you local media, papers, music press, website etc. Get your name mentioned on them all.
Write a profile on yourself and get it used where you can (a pic of you DJing at a well known venue will help)
Register on forums and contribute to the scene in general
Dont slag the promoters off behind their backs (they wont like it - and have long memories)
Be prepared to play for very little or for free. Get the opening slot, I know the venue will be empty , but you dont know you may get asked to stand in later, if one of the other DJs is a no show. You can also say that you have played at XXX to other promoters, raising your credibility further.
Etc etc, its hard work folks, but you can do it.
It may also help, if you make your own music to!!!
If you cant make music, impress others with your knowledge, by reviewing others work (like on our forum section or magazines etc).
Oh and do pick a descent DJ name (having DJ Blobby on a flyer may not work)!
Goodluck
